Guest Teacher

About CCC

Children’s Community Center (CCC) is a play-based, cooperative preschool in Berkeley with roots stretching back to 1927. For nearly a century, families have come together here to build something rare: a school where children grow through exploration and parents actively participate in the life of the classroom.

At CCC, play is the curriculum. Children spend their days building, painting, negotiating, storytelling, digging, climbing, and asking big questions. Teachers thoughtfully prepare the environment and guide social learning, while leaving room for spontaneity and child-led discovery.

As a cooperative school, CCC runs on partnership. Parents contribute time in the classroom and behind the scenes, which strengthens the community and keeps the program accessible. The result is a warm, engaged network of families who know one another and show up for one another.

About this role

This is a hands-on, heart-forward role at a cooperative preschool where play is serious work. As a Guest Teacher, you’ll step into the classroom of preschoolers and help create a day that feels both grounded and full of possibility. Mornings might mean joining a group deep in block-building negotiations. Afternoons could include supporting an art project, facilitating a game in the yard, or helping two children work through a disagreement with words instead of tears.

You’ll work alongside the Teacher-Director to support the flow of the day — setting up engaging activities, following children’s interests, and creating space for curiosity to unfold. The environment is child-initiated, which means you won’t be running the show so much as thoughtfully guiding it.

Job Responsibilities

  • Supervise and engage children during morning and afternoon programs in child-initiated and organized activities, encouraging peer interaction and helping with problem-solving and conflict resolution.

  • Assist Teacher-Director with the day’s projects and facilitate activities that support children’s spontaneity, curiosity, and choice.

  • Collaborate with staff and parents to support a well-balanced, rich, and varied learning environment for children as they grow their capacity for self-expression and social connection through exploration and play.

Qualifications

  • Passion for and experience working with preschool children.

  • Applicants with ECE credits preferred (at least 6 ECE units plus 2 in progress). Applicants with prior experience working with children who are planning to get credits will also be considered.

  • Current background check and health clearances required upon hire.
